Sonauli/Maharajganj: The increasing presence of Nepali-registered vehicles in and around the Indo-Nepal border town of Sonauli has emerged as a major concern, raising questions about the enforcement of cross-border vehicle regulations.
Within a radius of nearly 15 kilometers from the international border, thousands of motorcycles and cars bearing Nepali number plates can be seen moving freely on Indian roads day and night. Local residents allege that many of these vehicles remain in Indian territory well beyond the permitted period, yet appear to operate without any visible restrictions or checks.
According to established border regulations, Nepali vehicles entering India through border points are generally required to return to Nepal within the stipulated time unless they possess valid permits for extended stay or travel beyond designated border areas. However, residents claim that numerous vehicles continue to move across Sonauli, Nautanwa and nearby localities for prolonged periods without apparent scrutiny.
The frequent sight of Nepali motorcycles and cars on Indian roads, including during late-night hours, has sparked debate among local citizens. Questions are being raised about whether these vehicles possess the necessary permits and whether authorities are conducting adequate verification and monitoring.
Locals argue that despite the presence of multiple agencies at the international border, effective enforcement of vehicle movement regulations appears to be lacking. This has led to concerns regarding security, regulatory compliance, and possible revenue losses.
Given the sensitive nature of an international border, unrestricted movement of foreign-registered vehicles without robust verification is being viewed as a potential challenge for security agencies. Experts believe that regular monitoring of permits, vehicle records, and cross-border movement is essential to ensure transparency and prevent any unlawful activities.
The growing number of foreign number-plated vehicles on the roads of Sonauli has now become a significant public issue. Residents are demanding clarity from the administration and concerned agencies, seeking stricter enforcement of regulations and greater transparency regarding the movement of cross-border vehicles.
