Kathmandu/Sonauli: A devastating flood in Nepal’s Bhotekoshi River has caused widespread destruction, with several people reportedly missing and major infrastructure severely damaged.
According to reports from Nepali media, 32 police personnel and 25 pilgrims are among those reported missing, while contact with a large number of other people has also been lost. Rescue operations are underway, and helicopters have reportedly rescued 12 people from the affected areas.
The sudden rise in the Bhotekoshi River has caused massive destruction in several parts of Nepal. Several hydropower projects have reportedly been swept away or severely damaged, while a number of bridges have collapsed and been washed away by the powerful current.
The Muglin area, located roughly midway between Kathmandu and Pokhara, has reportedly suffered extensive damage. Roads and bridges in the region have been badly affected, creating difficulties for transportation and rescue operations.
The Bhotekoshi River originates in the Himalayan region and enters Nepal from the direction of Tibet. The sudden flooding has raised concerns not only in Nepal but also across the border in India.
The situation is particularly significant for the India-Nepal border region. Muglin is connected to the Sonauli-Gorakhpur route, and disruption of major highways and bridges in Nepal could affect cross-border movement and travelers heading toward Nepal.
Following the flood situation in Nepal, alerts have also been issued in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Authorities are keeping a close watch on rivers and low-lying areas, particularly those connected to waterways originating in or flowing through Nepal.
The scale of the disaster is still being assessed, and the number of missing people and extent of damage could increase as rescue teams reach remote areas.
Rescue operations continue, while authorities remain on high alert amid fears of further flooding and landslides in the affected mountainous regions.
