Unregulated E-Rickshaw Movement Near India-Nepal Border Raises Security Concerns

SONAULI, India, July 23 — The movement of e-rickshaws through sensitive areas near the India-Nepal border at Sonauli in Uttar Pradesh has sparked concerns among local residents over border security and regulatory enforcement.

Residents say e-rickshaws are frequently operating through routes including No Man’s Land, Prem Nagar Colony, SSB Road and Jugouli Road, carrying both domestic and foreign passengers despite the area’s strategic importance.

Sonauli is one of the busiest land border crossings between India and Nepal, with thousands of travelers crossing the border every day. Local residents argue that unrestricted vehicle movement near immigration and border checkpoints could create security vulnerabilities if not properly monitored.

The concerns have intensified following the recent detention of a foreign national by police near the Sonauli border in a security-related case. Authorities have not publicly linked the incident to e-rickshaw operations, but residents say it highlights the need for stricter enforcement of movement restrictions in sensitive border areas.

Local citizens have urged the administration and security agencies to strengthen surveillance, regulate e-rickshaw operations in restricted zones, and ensure that all passenger movement complies with existing border security protocols.

Police and local administrative officials had not issued an official statement on the allegations regarding unauthorized e-rickshaw movement at the time of publication.
