The iconic old border gate at Belahiya, which served as a landmark for travelers entering Nepal for many years, has now become a part of history. Under a border modernization and road expansion project, the old structure has been demolished and replaced with a grand, modern gateway that reflects Nepal’s evolving infrastructure and development.

According to officials on the Nepal side, the previous gate had become structurally outdated and was no longer suitable for the increasing volume of cross-border traffic. Growing congestion and the need for improved traffic management prompted authorities to construct a new entrance gate with a modern design.

The newly built Belahiya Gate features contemporary architecture, enhanced lighting systems, and improved aesthetics, creating a welcoming first impression for tourists and visitors entering Nepal. The Belahiya–Sunauli border crossing is one of the busiest international land routes between Nepal and India, facilitating the daily movement of thousands of travelers and vehicles.

For local residents and frequent visitors, the old gate remains a symbol of many memories and decades of cross-border connectivity. While it has now made way for a new structure, its legacy continues to be remembered by those who passed through it over the years.
